Meet Your Producer: Chad's Organics

During our April Program Break, the DA BOX CSA team visited Chad’s Organics, a longtime supplier of the CSA. DA BOX CSA customers are probably familiar with Chad’s stellar spinach, arugula, basil, and baby lettuce.  

Chad’s farm is located on a breezy 6 acres in Kau’mana. Even though Chad officially opened for business in 2010, he’s been growing crops since 2003. What started as a side project growing greens for his family and the families in his kids’ playgroup slowly grew into four greenhouses full of beautiful healthy greens. Chad’s meticulous nature is evident in both his product and his greenhouses, which he built himself and are sealed with a fine mesh to protect the crops from pests and diseases. He combines traditional farming with new organic practices, which consistently produces beautiful leafy greens.  

One of Chad’s goals is to grow safe and fresh produce that sustains the community. By selling his produce in Hilo on the same day it’s picked, Chad creates a stronger farm-to-table relationship with the community.  

Though he could expand his farm, Chad says he’s content with the way his farm is now. Aside from updates to his greenhouses, Chad plans to keep doing what he’s doing as long as he can.
