What Is DA BOX CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and that's what DA BOX stands for too!

We connect Hawaiʻi Island's farmers to the community in an affordable monthly subscription.

DA BOX CSA is The Food Basket's flagship healthy food access program established in 2014. DA BOX CSA works to support local agriculture by serving as a stable wholesale buyer for Hawaiʻi Island farmers. We purchase Hawaiʻi grown fruits and vegetables from over 70 farms per year and resell to residents at wholesale rates as an affordable subscription service.

Through DA BOX CSA, The Food Basket is advancing our mission to end hunger and to lead the creation of an equitable food system that benefits all producers and consumers on Hawaiʻi Island.

DA BOX CSA is a subscription-based paid service. If you are in need of free food assistance, please visit The Food Basket to find food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency food assistance near you.

How It Works:

Step 1: Choose Your Subscription

DA BOX CSA currently offers two CSA products: Regular CSA (7 items, good size for 2 people) and Mea'ai Nani (4 items, perfect for 1 person). All items are sourced from Big Island growers and producers. You can receive your CSA Weekly or Bi-Monthly (twice per month).

Step 2: Select Your Pickup Site

We bring local produce to pickup sites all over the island, choose yours from the schedule below.

Step 3: Choose Payment Option

We accept credit/debit cards as well as SNAP/EBT. (Bonus: SNAP users automatically receive a 50% discount thanks to DA BUX Double Up Food Bucks! Learn more at dabux.org)

Our CSA Products:

Regular CSA

Our original and most popular product! The Regular CSA is a thoughtfully curated assortment of fruits, vegetables, starches, herbs, and more. Usually 7 items, this bag is a perfect size for 1 or 2 people.

Mea'ai Nani

The Mea'ai Nani CSA product aims to rescue food that may otherwise be wasted. Some items may have cosmetic quirks like irregular sizes, shapes, or colors. Or they may be surplus produce that didn't find a market yet. Rest assured, all items are perfectly safe to eat. Great size for 1 person or to supplement the Regular CSA bag with a little extra produce.

When Can I Pick Up My CSA?

DA BOX CSA operates in monthly 'cycles', as shown in the calendar below.

New customers signing up for DA BOX will start their subscription at the beginning of the next cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It’sa sales model that connects regular people directly to local farms.CSA members have the benefit of knowing exactly where their food comes from,as well as knowing that they are directly supporting local farmers and their families.

DA BOX CSA is an aggregate CSA, meaning we order produce from many local farms and bring it all together in our warehouse, where we prepare all CSA member’s orders. We then distribute orders to pickup sites around Hawai’i Island. This means that farmers don’t have to worry about running their own farm’s CSA and they can focus on what they do best!

DA BOX works in monthly ‘cycles’. When signing up for DA BOX, you pre-pay for the month’s cycle and then pick up your CSA on either a Weekly or Bi-Monthly schedule. All member subscriptions continue automatically every month until we receive written or verbal notice to cancel. All new customers will start their subscriptions at the beginning of the next month’s cycle.

Since DA BOX CSA orders all produce fresh from local farmers every week, we depend on everyone picking up when they have signed up to. This is why we require at least 7 days' notice to 'pause' a pickup or cancel a membership. This is also why we cannot offer refunds or replacement bags for missed pickups without prior arrangement.

No, the contents of the CSA is set each week and cannot be customized. Think of it as a weekly surprise! If you have provided your email address in your order, you are automatically enrolled in our weekly Newsletter, which is sent every Friday and contains the menu for the week ahead.

If you have a severe allergy to certain produce items, please let us know and we will do our best to substitute.

DA BOX CSA will communicate important updates (e.g. delivery delays, holiday closures, etc.) via text or email. Please check your inbox regularly.

If you have provided your email address in your order, you are automatically enrolled in the weekly Newsletter, which is sent every Friday and contains the menu for the week ahead, as well as recipes, facts, and farmer names.

Select your payment method (credit card or SNAP).  Select ‘Pay with Credit Card’, and your order will appear in your Shopping Cart. After selecting your pickup site and your first pickup date, you’ll be prompted to add your credit card details.

All credit card charges are processed automatically in the week before a new month cycle begins.

All SNAP payments are processed in-person. After selecting your pickup site and your first pickup date, you will be sent your order confirmation via text or email. Bring your SNAP card to your first pickup so we can process your payment.

If you have missed a pickup, please get in touch with the DA BOX CSA team ASAP and we can try to make other arrangements for you to pick up your CSA, though we cannot guarantee success.

Since DA BOX CSA orders all produce fresh from local farmers every week, we depend on everyone picking up when they have signed up to. This is why we require at least 7 days' notice to 'pause' a pickup or cancel a membership. We cannot offer refunds or replacement bags for missed pickups without prior arrangement.

All remaining bags not picked up by Friday at 1pm are donated to a family or individual in need of food.

If you’ve missed multiple pickups without confirming your absence with the DA BOX team, your account may be suspended.

After one month of missed pickups, we will attempt to contact you via text or email to collect the owed payment on your account. If we do not hear from you, we will assume you no longer are interested in DA BOX CSA and your account will be suspended. A suspension notice will be sent via email or text. A suspended account can be reinstated at the start of the next monthly subscription cycle by calling the DA BOX CSA office at 808-796-3091.

If you are paying with SNAP/EBT, you must make special arrangements to pay off your unpaid balance in-person at our office in order to reinstate your account for the next month’s cycle.

Please get in touch with our admin team ASAP so we can go over your options.
