Meet the producers: Johnson Family Farm

Johnson Family Farm is a third-generation family farm. The owner, Garuda Johnson, his wife and five sons built the farm from scratch. Before the lava, their focus for 40 years was growing a variety of organically certified fruits and vegetables.

In 2018, the Kilauea eruption and high amounts of sulfur dioxide took a toll on the farm. The farm turned into a barren landscape of browned trees without leaves, empty greenhouses and a ground covered in filaments of Pele's hair.

Today the orchard has recovered and Garuda and his family focus mainly on orchard crops, which are easier to manage than vegetables. The orchard crops among others include papayas, avocados, citruses, sour sop, and star apple.
